Richard Ford felt obliged, in 1845, to publish his Handbook, introducing timid visitors to this bandit-infested wilderness, and his contemporary George Borrow took his life in his hands during his one-man campaign to sell the Bible to an understandably sceptical populace. The Grand Tour led eastwards, to Germany and Italy Iberia, walled away behind the Pyrenees, was uncouth, if not downright dangerous, and its flavour was as astringent as the olives that grew in its southern hills.
